Joel’s The Guardian of the City shows a Lenni-Lenape woman with her hands folded under her garb, watching over the City of Newark. The background is a traditional stain glass found in many Catholic churches woven with in a traditional Native American pattern. She stands on local land, exuding spirituality and leadership. She is an icon.

About the Artist:
Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Paterson, New Jersey, Jo-El Lopez uses the visual storytelling of traditional realism to comment on the intersection of faith and modernity, the strength of family, and the multidimensional contemporary urban experience. He presently has a studio at Gallery Aferro.
